The Spartans were a highly disciplined society, that underwent rigorous military training in order to be a part of and embrace an elite warrior culture. They famously utilized the phalanx formation to achieve their success, even in small numbers, against a far greater and heavily armed opponent. 

Unity and discipline -each man depended on and was protected by the man to his left and to his right. They were equally trained, disciplined and guided by common beliefs and commitment, whether using sword or shield… and they did so with ferocity.

Shield Defense -having a solid shield for defense was key, but most important was the protection it offered when combined with the larger unit reinforcing group cohesion.

Psychological Strength– the disciplined army and often unbreakable phalanx intimidated enemies and often prevented them from attacking to begin with, knowing that a formidable and overwhelming force was likely to prevail.

Training and Stamina -Spartans were often the best trained, most fit and battle harden opponents that many had ever seen.
